چکیده
We study here the spontaneous clustering of a submonolayer grains under horizontal circular shaking. The occurs when increasing oscillation amplitude beyond threshold. dense area travels in fashion at driving frequency, which even exceeds speed driving. It turns out that observed is due to formation density waves. analysis phenomenological model shows instability uniform profile arises by and captures non-monotonic dependence transition on global system. Here, key ingredient velocity individual increases with local density. interplay dissipative particle–particle interaction frictional substrate results this dependence, tested discrete element method simulations.

Uniform shock waves in disordered granular matter.
The confining pressure P is perhaps the most important parameter controlling the properties of granular matter. Strongly compressed granular media are, in many respects, simple solids in which elastic perturbations travel as ordinary phonons. However, the speed of sound in granular aggregates continuously decreases as the confining pressure decreases, completely vanishing at the jamming-unjammi...
متن کاملDensity waves and 1/f density fluctuations in granular flow.
We simulate the granular flow in a narrow pipe with a lattice–gas automaton model. We find that the density in the system is characterized by two features. One is that spontaneous density waves propagate through the system with well–defined shapes and velocities. The other is that density waves are so distributed to make the power spectra of density fluctuations as 1/fα noise. Three important p...
متن کاملDensity waves in the flows of granular media.
We study density waves in the flows of granular particles through vertical tubes and hoppers using both analytic methods and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We construct equations of motion for quasi one-dimensional systems. The equations, combined with the Bagnold’s law for friction, are used to describe the time evolutions of the density and the velocity fields for narrow tubes and hoppe...
متن کاملHydrodynamic effects in density waves of granular flows
Granular flows in a narrow pipe are studied numerically by the model taking account of hydrodynamic effects of fluid surrounding particles. In the simulations density waves are observed over the wide range of the Stokes number, which represents the inertial effect of particles. The mechanisms of formation of the density waves are considered and two types of density waves, which are observed in ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Cylindrical Granular Material Silos under Seismic Excitation
Silos generally work as storage structures between supply and demand for various goods, and their structural safety has long been of interest to the civil engineering profession. This is especially true for dynamically loaded silos, e.g., in case of seismic excitation. Particularly thin-walled cylindrical silos are highly vulnerable to seismic induced pressures, which can cause critical bucklin...
